Sarcoidosis

What is sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease caused by collections of inflammatory cells ( called granulomas). These granulomas then form as nodules in multiple organs most common in lungs, lymph nodes, eyes and skin. They can affect any body part. It is said to be due to body’s immune reaction to some infection or antigen.  It can cause long term complaints like fatigue, fever, swollen lymph nodes, cough, chest pain and shortness of breath. It may become life threatening in some cases. Sarcoidosis commonly affects young adults of both sexes. It occurs throughout the world by an average of 15 - 20 per 100,000. Those exposed to chemicals and pesticides are more susceptible.

Symptoms of Sarcoidosis
Since it affects many body parts, symptoms vary accordingly. Some people do not develop symptoms at all. Symptoms may appear slowly or suddenly. It is also possible to have periods of relief in between.

Causes of Sarcoidosis
The exact cause of sarcoidosis is not yet known. It is said that sarcoidosis is caused due to abnormal immune response to exposure to some environmental, occupational, or infectious agent. Genetics may play a role.

•    Between 20 and 40 years of age,
•    More in women than in men
•    Sarcoidosis in family increases the chances
